27/07/21 – Dolygaer outdoor activity centre has continued to enhance its facilities after investing £135,000 in new amenities for the centre. 

A new two terraced camping field has been added along with a shower block, classroom, stores, a campers seating area and even a pizza van! The improvements come for guests who opt to camp when visiting the site. 

Plans had been put into place for the extension for some time however Dolygaer has seen a boom in visitor numbers since the first national lockdown eased as visitors sought domestic getaways and outdoor entertainment. This led to some overcrowding in changing rooms and camping fields and as such the centre accelerated the process to meet the demand. 

Dolygaer worked in partnership with Merthyr Council to secure a grant of £19,819 through the Valleys Taskforce Covid Recovery Grantto create the new camping field and campers seating area. The field was specifically selected to give campers stunning views over the natural beauty spot.

The overall aim of the project was to increase the capacity on site at any one time as well as make the park as attractive and enjoyable as possible for visitors. The addition of the extra camp site and shower blocks will give people more space with the camping seating area adding a communal feel to the site. The pizza van will save guests from going off site to buy food as they will be able to enjoy stonebaked pizzas just a short walk away. 

The campsite and pizza van are set to open in early August with the classroom due to be completed later in the summer. The shower block and stores have been in use for a few weeks which helped with social distancing restrictions.

The increased demand for domestic stays has led to our visitor numbers significantly increasing. We have reacted to that increase in demand by not only adding the space to accommodate more people but also enhancing people’s experience with the addition of the pizza van and the camping seating area, which is set to provide some stunning views of the park. We are all very excited”.
