Parkwood Leisure to recruit more than 100 apprentices

Leading leisure management company Parkwood Leisure is supporting the next generation of employees by recruiting more than 100 apprentices over the next five years.

The company, which operates 87 leisure facilities on behalf of 26 local authorities, has pledged to increase the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal training programmes to five per cent of its 2,450-strong workforce.

In making the pledge, Parkwood has joined forward-thinking companies such as Balfour Beatty, Atkins and KPMG in becoming a member of The 5% Club, a national initiative which aims to tackle chronic skills shortages and youth unemployment while helping the UK remain at the forefront of innovation.

Parkwood’s HR director, Sue McGrath, explained that membership of The 5% Club supported the company’s existing plans to take on more apprentices.

“Recruiting the next generation is vital and we are passionate about providing high-quality work-based learning for young people who want to pursue a career in leisure,” said Sue.

“Opportunities will exist at our sites across England and Wales and we’re working closely with training providers to ensure that every apprentice is equipped with the skills they require.

“We’re also committed to providing ongoing opportunities - after they’ve gained their initial qualification we want apprentices to stay with us and continue to develop and progress their careers.”

Dr Sam Healy, programme director of The 5% Club, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Parkwood Leisure to the initiative. The company’s existing efforts to invest in the next generation are greatly welcomed and together we can strive towards a brighter future for young people in Britain.”

The 5% Club was initiated by defence technology company QinetiQ with an aim to get the UK’s public and private organisations to commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members report on their progress annually in a public document such as their annual report.
