Top marks for Tudor Grange Leisure Centre as RoSPA launches new safety review

A flagship leisure centre in Solihull has become the first in the country to undergo a new safety review launched by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), gaining a top grade in the scheme.

Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, which is operated by Parkwood Community Leisure on behalf of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, went through RoSPA’s Leisure SafetyMark programme, which assessed the standards of safety management at the site.

It was awarded a “Grade A” in recognition of its overall review score.

RoSPA, the UK’s family safety charity, promotes a balanced approach to safety, championing that life should be “as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible”. With this in mind, Leisure SafetyMark looks for evidence of proportionate safety management that does not unnecessarily reduce the benefits or attraction of physical activity, but that enables customers to enjoy their activities to the full within a well-managed facility and safe environment.

The review is not intended to be an exhaustive trawl of every health or safety standard that might apply, nor is it just a simple paperwork check. Rather, it focuses on the extent to which leisure operators have been able to develop and implement the critical building blocks for safety - management involvement, planning, consultation, competence and reacting.

As well as receiving a certificate, organisations taking part in Leisure SafetyMark receive a report on their performance, which includes recommendations for any future improvements.

David Rushton, head of education and leisure at RoSPA, said: “We are delighted to award the RoSPA Leisure SafetyMark to Tudor Grange Leisure Centre. The managers of the centre have successfully demonstrated a balanced approach to safety, ensuring the customer experience is not compromised by excessive safety measures and that key risk areas such as the swimming pools are well managed and safe.”

Simon James, centre manager at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, said: “Health and Safety is the number one priority for Parkwood Leisure, and the team at Tudor Grange are proud to have achieved the very first Leisure SafetyMark through RoSPA.  Taking part in a physical activity inherently poses some risk of injury, and while we are unable to eliminate this risk completely, we are delighted that RoSPA recognise our success in creating a safe and supportive environment in which to enjoy these activities and sport generally
Parkwood Leisure, a private operator of local authority leisure and culture facilities, will be undertaking Leisure SafetyMark reviews at 15 other of 84 venues this year.
